UV protection sunglasses – an absolute must-have item for the summer

09-08-2019

Summer sun generously shines its rays on us. We like basking in them, yet the very same rays may have a disastrous effect on our eyes. Therefore, it is important to remember about a beneficial impact of wearing sunglasses, especially in this time of the year!

How to choose the most suitable sunglasses?

First and foremost, we should make good quality a priority instead of opting for a low price or a trendy look, which does not obviously mean that good sunglasses have to be unstylish or cost a fortune. The most important aspect we should take into consideration while choosing sunglasses is our health. Make sure the sunglasses you decide to buy provide proper UV protection, which offer strong defence against sun-related eye damage.

Sunglasses? Only with UV filters!

Sunglasses without appropriate UV filters are not only ineffective, but may even do harm to our eyes. When exposed to direct sunlight, our pupils automatically contract and our eyes narrow in order to prevent sun rays from getting inside the eyes, which is a natural defence mechanism. Wearing sunglasses leads to a decrease in the intensity of light which reaches the eyes and thus allow the pupils to dilate. That is why it is so important for the sunglasses to offer suitable UV protection for our eyes. Using cheap, tinted lenses instead of good quality UV protection sunglasses may lead to the development of a vision defect, corneal or retinal damage or even cataract. Additionally, UV filters also protect the gentle skin around the eyes, so if we would like to enjoy a youthful look for a long time, we should choose good sunglasses. They are really worth investing into!

Laser vision correction patients are strongly advised to wear sunglasses as for the first 2-3 weeks following the surgery the eyes are more sensitive to light. No dressing is applied to the eyes after the procedure, but each patient is provided with a pair of glasses which are chosen in our Centre before the surgery and are included in the total cost. A lack of appropriate protection may impede the recovery. It should always be born in mind that sunglasses not only protect our eyes from the harmful effect of ultraviolet radiation but also from other factors which may irritate them, such as sand or wind.

People with a refractive error should wear corrective sunglasses. Such a 2-in-1 solution is a significant convenience, especially in the summer, when people suffering from a vision defect face a dilemma whether to wear corrective glasses or sunglasses. In the past, the range of sunglasses offered by the manufacturers was rather limited, which discouraged people from the purchase. Nowadays, a wide selection available in the shops enables us to choose glasses according to our taste and preferences.

Wearing corrective sunglasses also has its disadvantages… If we lose them during summer travel, we no longer have a UV protection or a vision comfort. This is probably one of the moments when people who wear glasses start considering laser vision correction ;-)

If you are thinking of undergoing a laser vision correction procedure, fill in a Preliminary qualification form ONLINE or call us to make an appointment for a preliminary qualifying examination to find out whether there are no contraindications to the surgery.
