EBK method, is it something new?

EBK method, is it something new? Explanation of how it works and how different it is from SBK Lasik Method.

According to many specialists EBK method is largely the same as PRK (1985) but with a small difference. In PRK epithelium is removed with a metal tool and in EBK it is also totally removed with a metal tool but with a plastic cap. It is called epikeratome, which sucks the epithelium in and leaves open cornea wound. Both methods are connected to a severe pain, risk of corneal haze and scars.

In SBK Lasik method a small flap of cornea is created with a microkeratome. Microkeratome operates just under the sub-Bowman's group; it saves the corneal cells and has many, not available before, advantages. Patient's vision is instantly improved, and discomfort (mostly tear production) is short (up to 3 hours) and not very intensive. Next day after the procedure patient is usually free from any discomforts. In SBK, after the operation, the cornea is covered with a flap created before, which provides natural protection, unlike EBK in which a contact lens is applied as a dressing. After EBK procedure, until the cornea is recreated patients experience strong pain. The minimal recovery period (after EBK) is 2 weeks. After the SBK Lasik procedure patients can go back to normal functioning (including driving) the very next day after the procedure.
