Is there one ideal method of laser vision correction? |

"Which method of laser vision correction is the best?" – this is one of the most frequently asked questions by people considering the laser vision correction procedure. But does a single, universal, and best method really exist for everyone?
Ophthalmology centres specializing in laser vision correction usually offer several treatment methods. Why? Primarily to ensure that each patient has a chance to qualify positively, taking into account individual anatomical and health conditions. This also provides the operating surgeon with a broader range of options, especially when the patient’s anatomical features — such as deep-set eyes — present a challenge.
The methods differ in how the cornea is prepared for vision correction using an excimer laser. They are divided into "surface" methods, which involve removing the corneal epithelium, and "deep" methods, which involve creating a flap in the cornea. At our Centre, we perform laser vision correction using the following methods:
In both the FemtoLASIK and SBK LASIK methods, the ophthalmic surgeon separates a thin corneal flap (approximately 100–110 micrometres thick), gaining access beneath the surface of the cornea's Bowman’s membrane. These are considered “deep” methods.
The TransPRK and LASEK methods are referred to as “surface” techniques because the intervention on the corneal surface is limited to only 50–60 micrometers.
As mentioned earlier, the methods listed above represent the first stage of the procedure – preparing the cornea for the action of the laser. Regardless of how the cornea is prepared, the actual vision correction is performed using an excimer laser. This stage is crucial to the final outcome of the procedure. The parameters required for the correction are entered into the laser by the surgeon, based on the data and tests collected during the preliminary qualifying examination.
The variety of methods allows the laser vision correction procedure to be tailored to the individual characteristics of each patient. The choice of the appropriate technique is based on the results of a qualifying examination, which takes into account parameters such as the thickness, shape, and curvature of the cornea, general eye condition and the degree of the refractive error. It is precisely on the basis of this data that a decision is made regarding whether the procedure can be performed and which method will be the most suitable for a given patient..
The surgeon’s experience plays an important role – it also influences the choice of the correction method applied in each case. Selecting the appropriate technique for laser vision correction largely depends on the operator’s knowledge and skills, as well as the accuracy of the preliminary qualifying examination. During the qualification process, the surgeon demonstrates the expected final outcome of the procedure, which is independent of the method used.
All things considered, there is no single, universal method of laser vision correction that suits everyone equally well. Thanks to the availability of diverse techniques combined with a thorough and precise qualifying examination, it is possible to tailor the most appropriate solution to a broader range of patients. Consequently, more individuals have the opportunity to achieve lasting vision improvement and enjoy a life free from glasses or contact lenses.
