Is spring pollen safe for your eyes?

07-06-2019

Spring is a beautiful season in which all nature wakes up and comes back to life after winter. Most of us longingly look forward to this period of time, yet it is a very difficult time for people who suffer from various allergies, especially those allergic to tree and shrub pollen. It is estimated that approximately 40 percent of Poles complain of seasonal allergy symptoms. Are spring allergies dangerous for the eyes and how to survive them?

As a result of exposure to allergens in the air, allergic people suffer from such symptoms as persistent hay fever, cough, irritation of nasal and pharyngeal mucous membranes, as well as itchiness and redness of the eyes which sometimes develops into conjunctivitis. The most effective way to limit the negative results of an allergy is to avoid allergen exposure. However, it might be difficult, especially in case of tree or grass pollen allergy, as the only solution would be to stay indoors at all times, which is virtually impossible to do.

In such a situation it is important to take special care of the watery, itchy eyes. What may turn out helpful is physiological saline, eyebright tincture or so-called ‘artificial tears’ which should be applied into the eyes. These preparations rinse the eyes and wash the allergen particles away. When the symptoms significantly worsen – it is worth to administer prescription or over-the-counter allergy medications.

During the polling period we should also remember about intensified eye hygiene and protection. If our eyes are itchy, it is recommended not to touch or rub them, especially if we wear contact lenses. Many people replace contact lenses with glasses during the spring allergy season, which is definitely a much better solution for watery eyes.

If you are allergic, you don’t like wearing glasses and you can’t use contact lenses for a long time, you should consider having a laser vision correction procedure. It will enable you to permanently get rid of your burdensome vision defect.
