How does using smartphones affect our eyesight?

28-11-2018

o smartfonach i wzrokuIn the contemporary society, the addiction to smartphones is constantly on the rise, and most of us do not imagine life without them anymore. Smartphones are no longer used merely to make phone calls, but they are devices which accompany us almost everywhere. We use them to send and receive text messages, check our emails, read everyday press, popular blogs or even books. Unfortunately, such a lifestyle adversely affects our eyes, and small-sized smartphone screens constitute one of the greatest threats to our eyesight.

Frequent headaches, constant eye fatigue, accommodative spasm, and in the long term the aggravation of short-sightedness are the most common symptoms of excessively long time spent looking at the smartphone screen. An ever increasing number of children and adolescents are suffering from similar problems. Experts are unanimous – one of the factors contributing to a continuously rising number of people suffering from vision defects is using these small electronic devices.

According to ophthalmologists, in the long run the blue-violet light which is emitted by devices such as smartphones is very dangerous for the eyes. It may lead to macular degeneration, which is one of the reasons for blindness. Opticians also emphasize the fact that there might be a correlation between the exposure to this kind of light and recurrent headaches, chronic fatigue and circadian rhythm disturbance.

What affects the eyes particularly badly is the combination of less frequent blinking and looking at the smartphone screen from a very close distance, both activities often done unconsciously. Normally, the human eye should blink an average of 12-15 times per minute. However, when we look at an image projected on a screen of a mobile device, we usually blink half as often, which results from excessive concentration on one point. Consequently, our mucous membrane is not properly moisturised, which in turn may lead to eye dryness.

What is worth pointing out is that the number of people suffering from vision defects such as short-sightedness or astigmatism grows higher every year. Vision defects affect not only adolescents but also little children. Without a doubt, mobile electronic devices significantly contribute to aggravation of these statistics. If you notice the first symptoms of an eye disease or deterioration of your eyesight, you should make an appointment with an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Vision defects should be immediately corrected and procrastination in this respect acts to the detriment of our eyes. We can also undergo a laser vision correction procedure and eradicate the defect permanently.

The achievements of the newest technologies facilitate our everyday life and considerably improve its comfort. Let’s not forget, however, to use them wisely and consciously.

Do not hesitate to make an appointment for a specialist ophthalmologic examination or the preliminary qualifying examination for laser vision correction.
