Eyelids surgery - Blepharoplasty

Over time, the thin skin of the eyelids loses its elastic properties, which causes the eyelids to droop and gives the face a look of sadness and fatigue. Upper eyelids surgery (blepharoplasty) makes the image of a sad or tired person disappear thanks to removing unnecessary skin fragments.

What are the indications for blepharoplasty?

The basic indication is usually presence of visible, age-related changes of the skin in the orbital region.

Skin in the said area is very thin and thus susceptible to stretching. Excess fatty tissue and folding of the skin cause the face to look sad and tired. The surgery can undo those changes and make the face look younger and more relaxed. Removal of the excess palpebral skin also contributes to an overall better mental condition.

In some cases, the pathologically shaped eyelids may cause obstruction of the visual field and influence the peripheral vision.
Surgical eyelid correction is also a way of treating palpebral hernias (palpebral bags). It is possible to have both ptosis and said bags removed in one surgery.

Blepharoplasty is a minor surgery, consisting of removal of the excess skin and, if necessary, also some parts of the orbicularis oculi muscle or/and fat hernia. The procedure itself is rather quick, requires little preparation and the recovery period is very short and simple. Upper eyelid surgeries take about one hour and are performed in an outpatient setting.

Blood clotting disorder and the use of anticoagulants is a contraindication to eyelid surgery.

How to prepare for the surgery?

The most important part of the preparation is an honest conversation with the surgeon. During the qualifying examination explain why you decided to undergo the surgery and what do you expect of it. You must remember that is your decision and you shouldn’t be making it under someone’s pressure or to fit to some ‘ideal picture’. Feeling confident with your decision is important because only then both you and the doctor will be convinced that the surgery should be performed. What is more, during the conversation the doctor will be able to answer all of your questions and show you exactly how the surgery will look like. The time of the qualifying examination is entirely your time, so feel free to ask any questions in order to resolve even the slightest doubt and overcome anxiety.

For 7 days before the surgery you must not take certain medications, such as: Acylpyrin, Alnagon, Aspiryn or Mironal, as they may interfere with the course of surgery.
Auriderm ointment boosts healing process and it advisable to use it for up to 10 days before the surgery. Good general health is a prerequisite for the operation.

Before the operation make sure to have taken care of:

  • A way to get back home/to a hotel
  • Someone to accompany you for at least few hours after the surgery

How does the surgery look like?

In the beginning of a blefaroplasty surgeon marks the lines of natural wrinkling on the eyelids. Placing the incisions within those wrinkles make them virtually invisible after the healing process is completed. After application of local anaesthetic and disinfection of the area, the surgeon then proceeds to remove the excess skin and/or adipose tissue deposits. Delicate and tiny sutures are then used for closure, which results in even lower visibility of scars. The operation ends with application of an ointment and a sterile dressing.

The surgery is very short, safe and painless, while its effects are long-lasting.

After the surgery

The small dressing covering the sutures can be removed on the next day. It may obstruct you vision, so it is advisable to have someone pick you up after the surgery.
Hygiene of the operated region (disinfection, application of ointment) is the most important part of the recovery period. Sutures are removed 7 days after the surgery during the follow-up visit (which is included in the price of the surgery).

During the first few weeks after the surgery the small scars may appear slightly pinkish. The colour will then slowly disappear to a point when it won’t be visible at all. The permanency of the achieved result depends on many factors such as: diet, everyday activities, type of skin and genetics.

The effect of the surgery

In very rare cases, the surgery has to be repeated after few years, as the hernia may reappear. During such surgery the old incisions are used, allowing for a much easier access to the targeted tissue.
